Almost every transmission issue can be prevented by regular maintenance, which also helps to increase transmission life. As your Cadillac dealership, we want to tell you a few signs you need to visit us for Cadillac transmission maintenance.

Delayed Gear Shifting

Your Cadillac’s transmission should shift smoothly and effortlessly into its new gear when instructed by the transmission control unit. Delayed shifting is a noticeable pause before the transmission shifts into its new gear. The engine revs will increase, but your vehicle won’t immediately move faster. You might also feel a strange lurching sensation as you accelerate.

This problem can be caused by old or dirty transmission fluid or a water leak into the transmission. It can also happen if the torque converter, the section of the transmission that links it to the engine, is damaged or due to worn transmission solenoids or a faulty transmission control unit sending incorrect instructions. Our technicians will investigate, find the issue, and fix it.

Burning Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid supplies the hydraulic power that moves the gears to their new position. The transmission operates at a high temperature due to the constant movement of numerous components, and the fluid helps to keep the temperature under control. It also protects countless components from excessive wear and tear by covering them with a friction-resistant coating.

The transmission fluid ages, and, as it gets older, it loses its heat resistance, and this can cause it to burn. Burning transmission fluid produces a foul smell like burning rubber. Even more importantly, the burning fluid generates no hydraulic power, so your transmission can’t shift. We fix this issue by draining the old fluid, then flushing the transmission with fluid and a cleaning solution. Once the transmission is clean, we refill it with fresh fluid.

Transmission Won’t Shift

If you try to move the gear selector and nothing happens, this is a serious problem. It can be even worse if the transmission suddenly refuses to move when you’re driving, as this can leave you stuck in a lower gear and unable to accelerate. If this happens, contact our service department ASAP so our technicians can investigate.

A transmission that won’t shift could be caused by a damaged shifter linkage. The shifter linkage connects the gear shift to the transmission, and if it fails, the transmission can’t determine the correct gear. A blocked transmission filter or low transmission fluid can also cause this issue, as the gears can’t move with the fluid’s hydraulic power. We’ll repair the problem, and your transmission will work smoothly again.
