A puncture can, unfortunately, happen at any time when you’re driving. A nail or any sharp object can cause a puncture and your tire will start losing air. You could pull over and wait for help, but if you know how to change a tire, you can be on the road again in minutes. As your Cadillac dealership, we want to tell you the quick and easy steps to change that flat like a pro.
From Your Cadillac Dealership: How To Change a Tire in 5 Easy Steps
Find a Flat Area
This is an important step, as you need a flat, solid surface to change that tire. Soft ground is dangerous, as the jack could sink into it. It’s also important that you choose a place as far from other moving vehicles as possible. If you’re on the highway when this happens, pull over into the breakdown lane as soon as it’s safe.
Grab The Tools
Changing a tire requires three items: a spare tire, a lug wrench, and a jack. These items are usually kept in the trunk. If you don’t see them, your car manual will show you their location. Once you’ve got the tools, you’re ready to change that flat.
Jack Your Car
Use the lug wrench to loosen each of the nuts. These nuts are securely fastened, so you must use force to turn them. The easiest way to do this is to position the lug wrench on a nut, then press down on the wrench handle with your foot with as much force as possible. Once you’ve loosened all the nuts so they can be turned by hand, look underneath your car for the jacking position.
Jacking positions are flat, reinforced sections on your car frame designed to support a jack. There is one behind each wheel. Locate the closest one to the flat tire, then position the jack underneath the jacking position and lift your car until the flat touches the ground.
Replace the Tire
Unscrew the nuts and place them to one side. Lift the flat off the wheel hub and replace it with the spare. Rotate the spare so the holes in the spare match up with the holes in the wheel hub. Screw the nuts into the holes and tighten them securely.
Tighten the Nuts
Lower your car and remove the jack. Use the lug wrench again to tighten the nuts as tightly as possible. You can now put the flat and the tools back in their places and drive away.
Once you’re on the road again, drive to our service department at Service Cadillac in Lafayette, LA. Our Cadillac-trained technicians will check your tire, and we can replace the spare for you.
