What Does the Light Mean?
The engine light is different from the other warning lights on your dash as it doesn’t warn of a problem with an individual system. It lights up in response to any problem that affects your engine. Your Cadillac’s computer has a huge number of sensors that connect to it, and each sensor is connected to an important component.
The sensors continually supply information to your computer on the health and functioning of the component they’re attached to. Your computer uses this information to make all the decisions that allow your Cadillac’s systems to work efficiently and effectively. If a sensor detects a problem, it immediately informs your computer. The computer logs the error and illuminates the engine light as a warning that something is wrong.
How To Identify the Problem
As we’ve seen, the engine light provides a general warning there’s a problem. If this light illuminates, visit our service department ASAP and our Cadillac-trained technicians will investigate the problem. We do this by connecting your Cadillac’s computer to our engine diagnostic system. The diagnostic system will list any error codes generated by the computer.
Some error codes are generic and apply to all vehicles, but many codes are specific to Cadillacs. This makes it important to have an illuminated engine light checked at your dealer. This saves time and money, as a regular mechanic’s diagnostic system can incorrectly identify the error and result in unnecessary and incorrect repairs.
