Combustion produces numerous toxic gases like carbon monoxide. The chemicals are converted by the catalytic converter before they’re expelled from your Cadillac via the exhaust system. The exhaust can suffer damage over time due to hard objects thrown up from the surface and exposure to water and mud. As your Cadillac dealer, we want to tell you about some signs you need to visit us for an exhaust service.
Signs You Need an Exhaust Service at Your Cadillac Dealer
Driving Short Distances
It might seem strange, but driving short distances can damage your exhaust pipe. As we saw above, the catalytic converter changes dangerous gases into harmless ones using a combination of extreme heat, intense pressure, and chemical reactions. This process also produces water, which evaporates quickly in the heat of the exhaust pipe.
If you routinely drive short distances, the conversion process occurs, but the heat in the exhaust doesn’t rise high enough to evaporate the water. This can leave small amounts of water in the pipe that can create rust on the exhaust. Once rust starts, it will eat through the metal until it forms a hole. You’ll hear loud noises from the exhaust if this happens. We’ll examine your exhaust and fix the problem.
Engine Noises
Your Cadillac has a superb engine that is remarkably silent. The only sound you’ll usually hear from the engine is the sound of acceleration when you hit the gas. If you hear loud noises from the engine, you could have an exhaust problem. This problem is caused by a hole somewhere in the exhaust system, as the exhaust is airtight to prevent any sounds from escaping.
A hole in the exhaust manifold or any of the joints in the system will produce noise. This is particularly true if your exhaust manifold is damaged, as this allows noise and dangerous exhaust chemicals to escape the exhaust system. The exhaust chemicals are toxic and can penetrate the cabin. We’ll repair or replace the damaged exhaust section, and the noises will cease.
Damaged Oxygen Sensor
Your Cadillac contains numerous sensors. These sensors continually send information to your computer and also receive instructions from it. The oxygen sensors are positioned in the exhaust system and monitor the oxygen level in the exhaust smoke. Your computer uses this information to adjust the amount of air in the fuel-air mixture to maintain a 14:1 air-to-fuel ratio.
Sensors can fail over time, and a damaged oxygen sensor won’t provide the information your computer needs. This forces the computer to guess and this can result in a poor air-to-fuel ratio. Your Cadillac will use more fuel if this happens, and your engine will suffer increased wear and tear. We’ll replace the damaged sensor to fix this problem.
Exhaust problems are usually quick and inexpensive to repair. Contact us today at Service Cadillac in Lafayette, LA.
