Cadillac’s newest driver-assist technology, Super Cruise, is the ultimate road trip companion. Super Cruise is the first truly hands-free driving assistant that maintains vehicle lane position without driver input. Here’s everything you need to know about Super Cruise.

How Does Super Cruise Work?

Several systems work together to support Super Cruise. Cadillac’s Adaptive Cruise Control System controls vehicle braking and acceleration. Cadillac Connected Services provides Super Cruise with your vehicle’s exact positioning and map updates. Through OnStar Emergency Services, emergency-certified Onstar advisors can assist injured or unresponsive drivers while Super Cruise is active. Your Cadillac’s radar sensors and cameras work together to monitor the area around your vehicle and ensure that you’re paying attention to the road ahead.

Several conditions are required to use Super Cruise:

  • You must be driving on a road mapped through LiDAR. Most compatible roads are highways separated from opposing traffic.
  • The roadway must have visible lane markings.
  • The cameras and radar sensors on your Cadillac must be in good working order with an unobstructed view of the area surrounding your vehicle.
  • The Driver Attention Camera system must detect that you are paying attention to the road.

How to Use Super Cruise

Once the required conditions are met, Super Cruise can be activated with a few simple steps:

  1. Activate the Adaptive Cruise Control with the steering-wheel-mounted button.
  2. Set the Forward Collision System to Alert and Brake.
  3. Turn off the Teen Driver System.
  4. Once you’re on a compatible roadway, the Super Cruise light will illuminate on the instrument cluster.
  5. Press the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel to activate Super Cruise. The light will be white initially.
  6. You are free to remove your hands from the steering wheel when the Super Cruise Light turns green.

Super Cruise will now maintain your lane position by accelerating, braking, and steering for you. You can turn off Super Cruise by pushing the Super Cruise button a second time. The Super Cruise system will also deactivate if the Driver Attention System camera senses that you are not paying attention to the road. You can override the Super Cruise system anytime by braking, steering, or accelerating.

Lane Change On Demand

Lane Change On Demand is an available feature on Super Cruise-enabled vehicles. Lane Change On Demand enables your Cadillac to change lanes while the Super Cruise system is activated.

To use Lane Change On Demand:

  1. When the system is active, tap the turn signal stalk in the direction you wish to merge.
  2. Once the system finds a clear lane in the indicated direction, the turn signal will be activated to alert surrounding drivers.
  3. The vehicle will move into the new lane on its own.

Messages on the instrument cluster will alert you if the lane change cannot be completed, before merging begins, and when merging is complete. Lane Change On Demand works on highways and moderate curves, as long as the road is mapped through LiDAR.

The new Super Cruise feature is available in several 2021 Cadillac models, including the CT4, CT5, and Escalade. The upcoming 2023 LYRIQ will also have Super Cruise. To see Super Cruise in action for yourself, set up a test drive today at Service Cadillac.
