Lafayette, LA is known as a hub city because of its excellent proximity to so many other great places to explore. Although there’s plenty to do in Lafayette, as it is the fastest-growing city in Louisiana, sometimes you just want to get out of town and take in some of the attractions outside of the city. Here are a few of the fantastic places to visit and some great day trips to take when in the area.

1. Arnaudville

Just 30 minutes from Lafayette you’ll find the small and charming town of Arnaudville. It’s a cool spot to hang out for the day, where you can get a photo with its signature enormous oak tree, go for a delicious brunch on the bayou at Little Big Cup, visit the unique art gallery, and then finish off the day with a cold one at Bayou Teche Brewing. Just remember to have a designated driver if you choose to imbibe.

2. Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge

If you head northeast for 35 miles from Lafayette, you’ll be greeted by a majestic wildlife refuge. It’s a great place to soak in nature and explore the swamps, watch the birds, go fishing, or take a paddleboard out. You can also rent a kayak or canoe to brave the swamps for an up-close and personal look at the alligators. It’s recommended to try and stay at least 30 feet away from the gators to avoid trouble.

3. Avery Island New Iberia

You can find Avery Island perched on a giant rocksalt deposit just half an hour away from Lafayette. There’s plenty to do here including touring the Tabasco factory (home to the fiery pepper sauce), taking in the beautiful gardens, and scoping the birds at Bird City. Be sure to snap a photo with the giant Buddha sculpture at the Jungle Gardens. The scenery is beautiful here and makes a relaxing way to kill a few hours.

4. Chicot State Park

You’ll have to venture an hour outside of Lafayette to reach Chicot State Park but it’s well worth the drive if you’re an outdoors enthusiast. You can come for a day trip or stay for the weekend and take advantage of some of the great camping in the area. There are plenty of hiking trails to enjoy as well as a lake where you can take a boat on the water and hunt for fish.

5. Eunice

Eunice is a great place to immerse yourself in true Cajun culture and history. On Saturdays, you can visit the Savoy Music Center and take in an authentic Cajun jam session in the afternoon. Be sure to visit the Cajun Music Hall of Fame while you’re there as well. On Saturday afternoons the Prairie Cajun Cultural Center offers free music, dancing, and even an educational cooking demo that explores authentic cuisine.
For all of these trips, you’re going to want a ride that can get you to your destination in style. Come on in to Service Cadillac and talk to our friendly staff about test-driving your new vehicle.
