Located in the central-southern part of the state, the city of Lafayette, LA is a great place to explore the different walking and hiking trails that the region has to offer. Surrounded by different wildlife refuges, parks, and nature trails, the city can be used as a base for day trips or weekend escapes. If you are looking for spots to go on a chill walk or a challenging hike, check out these amazing destinations.

1. Cypress Island Preserve, LA

Boasting almost 10,000 acres of territory, the Cypress Island Preserve is one of the most popular outdoor destinations for Lafayette locals and visitors. This place is located just eight miles east of the city center, making it possible to reach it in just 15 minutes by car. Along the different trails and paths, you can see some of the local wetland birds, as well as some of the beautiful wildflowers that blossom in the spring.

Once you make your way to the Cypress Island Preserve, you should check out the Lake Martin Levee Trail. With a total length of 2.5 miles, it goes throughout wetlands and passes by some of the most beautiful views of the lake and the surrounding swamps. Apart from hiking, this nature preserve is a great place for water activities, including boating, sailing, canoeing, and fishing. The best way to get here from Lafayette is via route LA-353 W.

2. Kisatchie National Forest, LA

The only national forest in the state of Louisiana spans an area of more than 600,000 acres and is located less than 90 miles south of Lafayette. Established in 1930, it is an excellent place for hiking, walking, birdwatching, and other outdoor activities. The Kisatchie National Forest is visited by hikers from all over the state, who come here to check out the different paths, ranging between moderate and advanced trails for all skill levels.

Getting to the Kisatchie National Forest from downtown Lafayette takes a little over an hour by car, driving north along route I-49 N. Although most places within the national forest are open free of charge for visitors, usage fees are charged in some specific areas and trails. If you are looking for a place to get lost in nature and get away from the routine, the Kisatchie National Forest is an excellent place to visit.

3. Chicot State Park

Located just 50 miles north of Lafayette, the Chicot State Park boasts a territory of a little under 6,500 acres and several hiking and walking trails that make it a popular weekend destination. Apart from the hiking paths, this state park has well-maintained facilities, designated picnic areas, playgrounds, campsites, and a primitive camping area. Getting here from Lafayette takes a little under an hour, following routes I-49 N and US-167 N.
