Your car depends on its tire. They’re the only part of your car in contact with the surface, and they carry the weight of your car. Your tire pressure has been carefully calculated by Cadillac designers for the best performance. As your Cadillac dealer, we believe it’s important that you check your tires regularly to keep them in good shape. These are the simple steps to check tire pressure.

Advice From Your Cadillac Dealer: How to Check Tire Pressure

You’ll Need a Gauge

There are several ways to check the pressure, but the most efficient is to use a manual or digital tire pressure gauge. You can test the pressure at your local gas station, but these gauges are not always accurate. A manual gauge is light and looks similar to an over-size pen. It doesn’t require batteries or an electrical charge to work, but you’ll have to read the pressure on the slide section.

A digital gauge is bulkier and heavier but still easy to carry in your hand. It also features an easy-to-read digital readout. The choice of gauge depends on your personal preference and your budget.

Find Your Required Tire Pressure

It’s important not to confuse the pressure marked on your tires with the pressure your car requires. The pressure marked on a tire is the tire’s maximum pressure. You can easily find the correct tire pressure for your model in your car’s manual. The tire pressure is also listed on a plate or sticker inside the door jam on the front passage door.

You’ll probably see different pressures marked for your front and back tires. These pressures are determined by the type of transmission you have and the part of your car that carries the most weight. You might also have different pressures listed depending on environmental or driving conditions. Write down the required tire pressure for each tire.

Test the Pressure

Once you know the correct pressure for your tires, it’s time to test them. Remove the valve cap on a tire and attach your pressure gauge to the nozzle. You’ll see a reading for the tire. Write this down next to the correct pressure you noted earlier. Screw the valve cap on again and repeat the process until you’ve tested all your tires.

Compare the expected and actual readings for your tires, and you’ll know if you need to add more air or release some. It’s now time to get the compressor out and correct any problems with your tire pressure.

Maintaining the correct tire pressure helps to give your tires a longer life and keep them in good condition. If you’d like to know more, come and see us at Service Cadillac.
