How Can You Jump Start Your Cadillac?

Knowing how to jump-start a car is important for every driver. It can often mean continuing your journey much faster than waiting for a repair truck to get your car started. As your Cadillac dealer, we’d like to tell you the safe and easy method to get a car’s engine running again. In this example, your Cadillac will recharge another car’s battery.

Advice From Your Cadillac Dealer: How To Jump-Start a Car

Locate the Battery

Most vehicles have the battery in the front, but some are designed with the battery in the rear. The other driver will very likely know where their battery is.

Park Close

To jump-start, you’ll need to connect the cables from your battery to the battery in the other vehicle. The cables connect to the battery terminals via metal saw-toothed clamps. Parking close to the other vehicle makes it easier to attach the clamps and prevents stretching of the jumper cables.

Use Correct Sequence

Connecting jumper cables is perfectly safe as long as you follow the correct procedure. Cables must be attached one at a time and in the right order. A wrong connection will either not work or could drain your battery. In certain circumstances, making the wrong connection could cause a fire in the engine.

The red cable is positive, and the black cable is negative. When you connect the cables, make sure that the black and red cables don’t touch each other. Now let’s take a look at the right way to connect the cables.

Positive First

Take one end of the red cable and attach it to the positive terminal on the dead battery. This terminal is usually identified by a + sign, or it may have a red plastic cover. Check the clamp is securely attached to the dead battery’s positive terminal, then take the other end of the red cable and connect it to the positive terminal on your battery.

Negative Second

Once the positive cables are connected take one end of the black cable and attach it to the negative terminal on your battery. The final step is very important. The other side of the black cable must be attached to any unpainted metal surface in your engine. This connection acts as a ground wire and creates a circuit between your battery and the dead battery.

Give Some Juice

Start your Cadillac’s engine and allow it to idle. After a few minutes, try and start the other car. If it doesn’t start immediately, return to your Cadillac and idle the engine for another ten minutes.

Remove The Cables

Once the other car starts, remove the jumper cables in the reverse order you connected them, and your job is done.
