Fuel injectors have a vital role in your engine’s performance, but many drivers don’t know much about them or what they do. As your Cadillac dealer, we want to tell you why they’re important, signs that something is wrong with them, and how our fuel injector cleaning process works.
From Your Cadillac Dealer: What Is Fuel Injector Cleaning?
What Is a Fuel Injector?
Fuel injectors spray fuel into your engine, where it mixes with air in the correct ratio to produce efficient combustion. Sensors are connected to the injectors and receive instruction from your computer on how much fuel must be sprayed and when it must be sprayed. The correct timing is essential to ensure the mixture is perfect so your engine will work correctly.
There is usually one injector per cylinder to supply the necessary fuel. As time passes, natural sediment in the fuel combined with the engine heat can cause one or more injectors to become blocked. If this happens, your engine will develop problems and, in extreme cases, won’t start at all. Cleaning the injectors removes any blockages or gunk and allows the injectors to work efficiently again.
Signs the Injectors Need Cleaning
Blocked or dirty injectors reduce the amount of fuel available to create the perfect 14:1 air-to-fuel ratio needed for optimal engine performance. If your engine lacks fuel, it becomes fuel-lean. A fuel-lean engine has less power, especially when accelerating, and can also suffer misfiring or stalling. In addition, inefficient combustion can cause long-term engine damage.
Cleaning Process
Removing the Injectors
Our technicians test the pressure in the fuel system using a diagnostic scanner before removing the injectors. The system operates under high pressure to squirt fuel into the engine, and removing the injectors when the system is still pressurized is dangerous. They also ensure your engine is cold, as the injectors may still contain fuel residue.
Testing the Injectors
The injectors are unbolted from the housings and then inserted into a testing machine. This process is slightly different depending if you have a gasoline or diesel engine. Two separate machines are used, as gasoline and diesel injectors are incompatible and require different testing in specialized machines as they operate at different pressures.
Inside the testing machine, the correct type of fuel is pumped through the injector, and the fuel spray pattern is analyzed. If the test identifies a bad injector, we can replace it for you. If the injector is simply dirty, we continue with the cleaning process.
Cleaning the Injectors
The cleaning process involves pumping fuel at high speed through the injectors backward and forward through them to remove any blockages. Once the injectors are clean, we reinstall them.
