Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge was established in the late 1980s and is a sprawling public recreation area that features lakes, bayous, and hardwood swamps. Providing habitat to over 200 species of resident and migratory birds, this place is a wonderful wildlife-watching destination that can be visited as part of a day trip.
The Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge encompasses an area of over 15,000 acres and is part of the larger Sherburne Complex Wildlife Management Area. Located just 35 miles northeast of the Lafayette city center, this place can be reached in less than 50 minutes by car via route I-10. Some of the specimens you can find here include wood thrush, Carolina chickadees, warblers, and flycatchers.
2. Camping at Lake Fausse Pointe State Park
Covering more than 6,000 acres of territory and established in what was once the site of an important settlement of the Chitimacha people, Lake Fausse Pointe State Park is the perfect destination to go on a memorable camping adventure. This nature reserve is located about 40 miles southeast of downtown Lafayette and can be reached in about 50 minutes via route I-10 and Bayou Benoit Levee Road.
Lake Fausse Pointe State Park features eight primitive campsites that can be reached via a series of hiking trails. Furthermore, five canoe campsites are also available for water sports enthusiasts exploring the lakes and rivers of the area. Some of the available amenities include picnic areas, pavilions, playgrounds, boat launches, a splash park, and an interpretive center.
3. Swimming at Cypremort Point State Park
If you are looking for a place where you can swim and cool down on a hot summer day, Cypremort Point State Park is the place to be. Located on Vermillion Bay and about 45 miles south of Lafayette, this public recreation area spans about 185 acres and can be reached in a little under one hour by car.
