The engine of your Cadillac powers more than just the wheels. The car belt, also called the serpentine belt, carries the engine’s power to the alternator, the power steering pump, the air conditioning compressor, and the water pump. So if your serpentine belt fails, quite a few things fail along with it. Here are 5 signs that you might need to visit your local Cadillac dealer for a new car belt.

Your Alternator Stops Working

When any of the parts that depend on your belt begin to malfunction, you should always check the betl itself. One key skill in the art of diagnosing engine trouble is knowing how all the parts interdepend upon each other. For instance, if your car won’t start, then perhaps your battery has died. If a jump start won’t then keep the car running, your alternator has most likely stopped working.

When functioning well, the alternator uses the serpentine belt to transmit engine power to your battery, keeping it fully charged, and so one common reason for a faulty alternator is a loosened, slipped, or broken serpentine belt. If your belt has only slipped, you might be able to put it back into place. But if it’s loosened or broken, you’ll need a technician to either fix or replace it.

Your Engine’s Heating Up

If you notice any signs of an overheating engine, check that your cooling system is working. If the water pump is at fault, then perhaps the serpentine belt isn’t doing its job of powering the pump. The water pump keeps coolant fluid flowing through the engine. Without it, your vehicle will quickly run into serious trouble.

The first sign of an overheating engine is usually the temperature gauge on your instrument panel ticking up. A more dramatic indicator would be steam pouring out from under your hood. In either case, pull over, allow your engine to cool, then check your coolant fluid, water pump, and serpentine belt.

Your Steering Is Heavier

Power steering is a wonderful thing. It allows you to turn the wheel easily, with very little effort. If you notice your wheel suddenly becomes a lot harder and heavier to turn, then you have a problem with your power steering mechanism. More often than not, it’s a faulty serpentine belt.

Your Air Con Fails

This is one you’ll notice on either very hot or very cold days. If your air conditioning isn’t properly working, one reason could be a broken serpentine belt. If the belt looks intact, then alternative causes might be electrical issues, leaking refrigerant, or a broken condenser.

Your Belt Looks Frayed or Cracked

A serpentine belt should be in excellent condition at all times. If you pop your hood and study the belt and notice it’s frayed or showing little cracks, then it’s time for a replacement. It’s never worth the risk of driving with a damaged or worn-down belt, which could snap while you’re out on the road.
