Lafayette-Science-Museum-Ext-Lafayette-LA

There’s no better way to learn about the world around you than in a museum. Nowhere else will you find such easy access to hands-on and visual experiences that inspire. Lafayette, Louisiana, is a great place to explore the world through museums, and we’ve chosen our must-visit favorites.

  1. Lafayette Science Museum

Lafayette Science Museum is one of the best museums in the area to visit, especially with kids. Plan to explore their exhibits on such scientific topics as meteorites, biology, and spacecraft. The museum offers a wide array of hands-on experiences about the word in which we live, and they always have fun activities planned for visitors. Once you’ve checked out the museum, visit the planetarium to get up close and personal with the stars.

The Lafayette Science Museum is open Tuesday-Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday from 1-6 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children 4 through 17.

  1. Acadian Cultural Center

If you want to know more about the culture of the Acadians (also known as the Cajuns), you’ll want to visit the Acadian Cultural Center and participate in a guided tour that walks you through the museum’s curated collection. Time your visit to be able to attend one of the various events they hold at the center throughout the year, such as a dulcimer jam session.

The center is open Tuesday-Friday from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m.-noon. Admission to the museum is free.

  1. Children’s Museum of Acadiana

This is one of the greatest spots in the area to give your little ones a hands-on learning experience. The Children’s Museum of Acadiana is always up to something — craft workshops, Girl and Boy Scout badge opportunities, and more. Even if you choose not to participate in one of their events, their exhibits are always available and fun. The exhibits include opportunities to learn about health, architecture, ambulances, and more.

Admission is $7 for children and adults. The Children’s Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from 1-5 p.m.

  1. Lafayette Art Association & Gallery

For a chance to see the local arts, visit the Lafayette Art Association & Gallery. They showcase an ever-revolving cast of local photographers, crafters, and artists to support the art community. Come here to enjoy some great art, or take the reins to make it yourself at one of their workshops. Whether you want to hone a skill or learn a new craft, the gallery hosts a number of classes throughout the year, including learning the basics of drawing or watercolor painting in one of the weekly classes.

The gallery is open Wednesday-Friday from noon-5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Take some time to explore all the museums Lafayette has to offer. Let’s be lifelong learners and experience our past, present, and future together. If there’s another museum you love to visit, let us know — we’re always looking for a reason to learn something new.
